Practical projects that tackle social issues

  • Development of optimal pruning and harvesting assistance technology for orchards using tree shape prediction and AR.

Responsible for: Tsumura Seminar, Nagata Seminar, Tsukada Seminar, and Sasao Seminar Joint Group

This project aims to create a futuristic system that utilizes the latest engineering technology and measurement data from orchards to assess the condition of trees, and uses AR technology to provide appropriate instructions to workers.

This project is being carried out in cooperation with pear farmers, the local government, related organizations, and businesses in Shiroi City. Through trial and error, our critical thinking skills have been nurtured.

Mutsunosuke Kinoshita (3rd year student, Information Systems Engineering / graduate of Chiba Prefectural Kamagaya High School)

  • Construction of a Japanese Speech Corpus

In charge: Associate Professor Yoshinori Tsukada

To create an AI that accurately recognizes Japanese, a vast amount of voice data from people of different ages and genders is necessary. In this project, we are working to build a database of Japanese voices from the elderly and young children.

When collecting audio data, it's necessary to pay attention to topics of conversation and tone of voice, and I feel that my communication skills have improved not only technically but also in other ways.
This project won an Excellence Award at the LLM Data Construction Ideathon "Ichikara Try2025"!

Mamoru Maeda (3rd year student, Information Systems Engineering / graduate of Reitaku High School Chiba Prefecture)

  • Smart Cafeteria

In charge: Associate Professor Ayumi Arai, Associate Professor Chen

At the "Hiiragi Student Cafeteria," which sees a surge in users during lunchtime, AI cameras are being used to investigate the flow of people. Furthermore, by predicting the cafeteria's congestion levels and disseminating that information, users can more easily avoid crowded times.

I was in charge of building the "pipeline" that transports camera footage and analysis data. Through trial and error, such as trying to reduce time lag, my practical skills improved.

Takahiro Azegami (3rd year student, Information Systems Engineering / A graduate of Asuka Mirai Kizuna High School, Aichi Prefecture)

  • Hakodate overtourism countermeasures using AI camera image analysis

In charge: Professor Atsushi Oshio, Associate Professor Ayumi Arai

We will install AI cameras in tourist areas of Hakodate to collect data on the number and flow of people. Based on this data, we will work to solve the problem of overtourism * by predicting "which places will be crowded and when."

*This refers to an overconcentration of tourists in a specific area, exceeding acceptable limits.
This can contribute to problems such as traffic congestion and waste management.

Witnessing AI technology visualizing congestion levels at tourist destinations taught me that understanding the situation on the ground and interpreting data are crucial for solving social problems.
