Student LifeSupport for students with disabilities
1. Support for students with disabilities at Reitaku University
① History of supporting students with disabilities
After having been established as the "Disability Student Support Office Preparatory Office," Reitaku University formally established the "Disability Student Support Office" (at the time) in 2018, and in line with the university's founding spirit, faculty, staff and students are working together to promote support for students with disabilities. In order to ensure that students are provided with equal opportunities for educational and research activities and can make the most of their individual abilities, regardless of whether they have a disability or not, we provide support in cooperation with various external organizations as well as with related departments on campus, such as the undergraduate and graduate schools, student counseling offices and health support centers.
② Role of the Disability Student Support Division
The Disability Student Support Division responds to inquiries about studies based on the request (intention) of students with disabilities, and coordinates (builds consensus) on and off-campus collaboration and cooperation through constructive dialogue so that each department and faculty related to studies can provide direct and indirect support. In addition, the Division plays the following roles, including improving the response capabilities of faculty and staff and supporting the faculty and staff who provide support.
・Discussion and request for reasonable accommodation (contents of support)*
・Planning and running training sessions and case study meetings for faculty and staff
・Training and managing student supporters
・Creating and updating guidelines for supporting students with disabilities, and publicizing them
・Survey on the actual situation of students with disabilities and compilation and reporting of cases
*Reasonable accommodation will be decided and provided after sufficient consensus and common understanding is reached between the student and the university (the student's department, counselor, Disability Student Support Division, etc.) through constructive dialogue.

4. Examples of support provided as reasonable accommodation
①Notifying and communicating requests for reasonable accommodation to relevant faculty and staff members
② Adjustments to take various exams (including entrance exams) in separate rooms, test times, answering methods, etc.
③Seating considerations during classes and events
④ Guarantee of information on class materials (permission to record and photograph notes on the board, distribution of materials online, etc.)
⑤Adjustment of deadlines for reports and assignments
⑥Provision of equipment and fixtures that take into consideration the characteristics and symptoms of disabilities
7) Rest and relaxation when feeling unwell (securing a place to rest and take a break)
⑧Other considerations regarding campus life
9. Collaboration with external institutions (medical institutions, employment support organizations, etc.)
*The above is an example, and we will consider the details through consultations with you after you apply for support, such as by listening to your requests for support. Even if the content of the support application is the same, the considerations and implementation details that can be provided may differ depending on the curriculum, classes, and grade evaluation criteria and methods of the faculty, department, and major.
5. Examples of cases where accommodation is unlikely to be recognized as reasonable accommodation
① It involves a fundamental change to the educational objectives or content of the university.
② Substantial changes to grading standards or undermining the guarantee of fair grading.
3) Changes in course content that may significantly impair the learning opportunities of other students
4) It imposes an excessive burden on the University in light of its current situation (personnel, organizational, financial, etc.).
⑤Things that are not related to or incidental to the university's core business
6. Student Supporter System
① Role
You will be working as a paid or unpaid volunteer to support students who have signed a reasonable accommodation agreement (including students who have submitted an Academic Support Application) with classes and other activities, as well as tasks that arise at the request of the Disability Student Support Division.
② Development
Participants will receive approximately six hours of training in total on basic understanding and support skills for students with disabilities, as set by the Disability Student Support Division.
③Application
The Disability Student Support Division is looking for students who can understand students with disabilities, see things from their perspective, and act responsibly. If you are interested in doing something that will help others, interacting with a diverse range of people, or making effective use of your free time during class, please feel free to contact the Disability Student Support Division (sg-shien@ad.reitaku-u.ac.jp).
7. Appeals
① Consultation desks (student consultation desks, etc.) if you feel you have been subjected to unfair discriminatory treatment
If a student with a disability believes that they have been unfairly discriminated against, or has complaints about the content of support, including reasonable accommodation, or the decision-making process, they should consult with a faculty member they are close to or a "Harassment Counselor," as the Harassment Prevention Committee will accept their complaint and make adjustments to resolve the dispute from a third-party perspective. If it is difficult to consult with relevant people on campus, it is also possible to consult with external offices, so please do not hesitate to use them.
②Establishment of a system for preventing conflicts (preventing harassment)
