教員プロフィール

専門は異文化コミュニケーション。中学・高校で米国の音楽・ポップカルチャーに興味を持ち、ホームステイ・短期留学を経験。大学入学で上京後も「自分探しの旅」へ米国に留学。20代前半で世界20カ国を巡る。企業研修の仕事を通して、異文化コミュニケーション学と出会う。30歳を境に一念発起し退職後渡米。オレゴン州ポートランドのThe Intercultural Communication Instituteでのインターンシップを経て、その後、ポートランド州立大学で修士号と博士号を取得。現在は麗澤大学国際学部で教鞭をとる。現在は人の人生の「語り」から学ぶ、「ヒューマンライブラリー」などをゼミ生と実施している。

好きな言葉（座右の銘）を教えて下さい。: Our life is our art. By John Lennon

休日の過ごし方や趣味を教えてください。: あまり行けませんが時間があれば足を運ぶのが、東京現代美術館。清澄白河駅で下車し、古い下町通りを通り抜けるとたどり着けます。創造性に富んでいて刺激的なモダンアートに惹かれます。ここで見たアートを、数か月後にニューヨークのグッゲンハイム美術館で目撃したことも。美術館にあるソファーが気に入っています。そのソファーに座る人々もアートに見えてくるのです。

１週間の休みと100万円が自由に使えたら、どこで、何をしますか？: 動物福祉団体のヒューメイン・ソサイエティー・インターナショナルへの寄付と、マイクロファイナンスへ投資する。一週間の休みは、実家で庭いじりをする。

過去の1日で、「もう1度やり直せる日」があるとしたら、それはいつで、どうしたいですか？: 過去の記憶は不確かなもの。過去をやり直したとしても、やり直さなくても、今がどうなっているかなど予測も付きませんし、未来が自分の理想通りになるかどうかも分かりません。ただ、今があるだけ。

大学4年間で「学生に訪れてほしい場所」はどこですか？その理由も教えて下さい。: 今いるところと全く違う環境。ペルーのイキトスから出ているアマゾン川ツアーがお勧めです。マングローブの熱帯雨林で高湿多雨な環境に圧倒され、まさに自分が自然の一部になったような感覚をおぼえました。現地では珍しい動物を間近で見られたり、新鮮なフルーツを楽しめたりもします。アナコンダをくるっと首に巻いて記念撮影も可能。ラッキーであれば、アマゾン川で淡水イルカに会えます。「地球の肺」と呼ばれるアマゾンで、バケツの水をひっくり返したような激しいスコールに打たれれば、あなたも人生観が変わるかも。

大学4年間で「学生に読んでほしい本」は何ですか？その理由も教えて下さい。: ジョージ・オーウェルの『1984』という小説。学部生の卒業論文で取り上げた懐かしい作品です。恐怖政治による全体主義国家の支配下、どこにいても監視されている。個人の思想まで。「ビッグブラザー」の脅威に怯えながらも、自分らしさを保ち、生き抜こうとする主人公ウィンストンの終わりは…。現代社会の現象と重ね併せて読むと興味深いですし、社会や自分自身に対するさまざまな問いも浮かんでくるかもしれません。
